In 1964, Roland Wee was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship by the Singapore Government to help accelerate the industrialization of Singapore. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Southampton University, England in 1967.
He was bonded to the Government for 5 years and worked with the Public Utilities Board as an Engineer in the design, construction and maintenance of power plant. He was also selected to work in the UK Atomic Energy Agency for 3 months representing Singapore at the IAEA Conference in Vienna in 1969.
Later, he joined Beecham Pharmaceuticals, a British pharmaceutical company that manufactures semi-synthetic penicillin. This was a state-of -the-art pharmaceutical plant and he was deeply involved with its design, construction, commissioning and maintenance. He also developed and modified many existing systems to make them suitable for manufacturing antibiotics in the tropics.
In 1973, Roland founded M.E.I. to provide professional engineering services for the planning, design and construction of manufacturing and chemical plants in Singapore, China and the Asia Pacific. M.E.I.'s capabilities and proficiency in executing these projects have been acknowledged and used by many MNCs, including many Fortune 500 companies.
Under his leadership, M.E.I. has designed and built many plants and met all of our clients' demands for quality, efficiency, safety and budget. M.E.I. continued to work for these companies in China in the early 1990s. M.E.I. Project Engineers (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. was formally established in 1996.
